“Your client is not your friend”
I’ve seen this advice touted A LOT in Facebook business groups and the likes… but the thing is… it’s terrible advice!
Because your clients are human just like you. Your clients have real lives, with real pain, real joys and real frustrations.
One entrepreneur who I admire immensely is ROCKING it in her business… and she lost her baby boy just a few months ago.
Now, imagine you’re working with her. She’s your client, not your friend, right? So it’s purely transactional.
What do you need done? Okay, here you go. Job done. Cheque please!
And I’ve seen entrepreneurs say this…
“When the cheque clears, I lose all interest in the client and the gig”
THAT IS SO SAD!
I don’t want to run a business where my only joy, my only inspiration, comes from making money!
I want to run a business that truly helps people. I want to empathise with my clients, to understand their business needs deeply, but also to connect with them as another human being.
So that’s exactly what I’m doing.
I’m being real and honest with my client. I’m connecting with him in genuine ways. I’m offering advice where I can and I’m trying to deeply understand his business.
And you know what I think will happen? I’ll be able to add massive value to my clients! I’m quietly 🤞 hoping to produce massive sales results for him… I genuinely want his business to succeed and grow.
And ultimately, one day, I’d like to call him friend.
Now, does this mean you have to form deep, lasting friendships with all your clients? No, of course not!
Some clients will only work with you for a short time. But during that time, I encourage you to offer your friendship to your clients.
Ask them how their day went.. and listen!
Ask them how their holiday was… and listen!
Don’t be purely transactional 💕
